The Harvest Festival also includes music, children’s games and inflatable bounces, face painting and a scarecrow-making contest for residents and businesses.

Folk art demonstrations and displays include quilting, felting, spinning, crocheting, tatting and bobbin weaving. Hay rides will also be offered. A farm market will be selling a wide variety of apples and other fall harvest items including pumpkins, squash, apple butter, jam, honey and cider.

Fall Horseback Riding

Guided Trail Rides

Explore the vast mountainous terrain and make a new equine friend with horseback riding in northern Michigan!  Trail rides begin from the Boyne Highlands equestrian facilities and cover the resort’s 4,000+ acres. The wooded trails have been gently cut through natural vegetation and are exclusive to riders on horseback.  One hour rides are available.

Trail Rides offered Thursdays - Sundays departing at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm.

  • One hour ride - $45 per person
  • Two hour ride - $80 per person

All riders must be at least 9 years of age.

Pony Rides

For children not yet old enough to guide a horse on their own, we offer pony rides for ages 8 and under.  We’ll hoist your young ones into the saddle and they can experience a true ride as handlers escort the horse for a gentle walk through the pasture near the resort’s equestrian facilities.

  • 15 minute ride - $25 per child
  • Call Boyne Highlands, 231.526.3001 to book this adventure!

Arrival

Please arrive 10-20 minutes before your scheduled ride time for proper helmet fitting and completion of waiver and release forms.  This ensures that the ride begins on time.

Dress

Trail riders are advised to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.  Athletic shoes are acceptable but a leather shoe with a heel is best.  Each rider is required to wear a helmet which will be provided.  Riders wearing shorts and/or sandals may be asked to reschedule.

Cancellation

We must enforce a 24-hour cancellation policy.  Reservations canceled within 24 hours of ride will be charged 50% of the price of their scheduled ride. No shows will be charged the full price of their scheduled ride.

Are you ready to enjoy the crisp fall air? Then join a Park Ranger at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to explore the dunes, marvel at ghost forests, look for wildlife, and beautify the beaches!

Every Saturday after Labor Day, meet a Park Ranger at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire on M-72. The Park Ranger will introduce the week’s topic and then lead a car caravan a short distance to the starting point for the walk. Each week, a different topic and location in the park will be featured. All are welcome.

  • September 12 - 1:00 p.m. - The Whole Point of Sleeping Bear Dunes: This two-mile round-trip hike on the Sleeping Bear Point Trail epitomizes the area protected by the park. Discover shifting dunes, specialized plants, a ghost forest, shipwrecks, and fantastic views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. If you only hike one trail in the park, this is the one!
  • September 19 - 1:00 p.m. - Beaver’s Been Here: Explore the shoreline in search of nature’s industrious beaver. The Park Ranger will show you clues that “beaver’s been here” and perhaps even help you spot this amazing animal.
  • September 26 - 12:00 p.m. - National Public Lands Day Coastal Cleanup: Enjoy the park on this annual “fee-free” day and help beautify the beaches you love by joining Park Rangers and volunteers for this coastal cleanup event.

All Park Ranger-led programs are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass to join in the fun. Please note that on National Public Lands Day, September 26, 2009, the entrance fee is waived. Also, the program starts at noon instead of 1:00 p.m. Reservations are not required, but are suggested if you wish to bring a group. Please call 231-326-5134, extension 330, for details.

Tahquamenon Falls - Eastern U.P.

Categories: Newberry, Recreation, Waterfalls

Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses close to 40,000 acres stretching over 13 miles. Most of this is undeveloped woodland without roads, buildings or power lines. The centerpiece of the park, and the very reason for its existence, is the Tahquamenon River, with its waterfalls.

The Upper Falls
One of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across. A maximum flow of more than 50,000 gallons of water per second has been recorded cascading over these falls.

The Lower Falls
Four miles downstream is the Lower Falls, a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. Although not as dramatic as the Upper Falls, they are equally magnificent. The falls can be viewed from the river bank or from the island, which can be reached by rowboat rented from a park concession. The island walk affords a view of the falls in the south channel.

The Tahquamenon River
Rising from springs north of McMillan and drains the watershed of an area of more than 790 square miles. From its source, it meanders 94 miles before emptying into Whitefish Bay. The amber color of the water is not rust nor is it muddiness; it is caused by tannin leached from the Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock in the swamps drained by the river. The extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the large amounts of foam, which has been the trademark of the Tahquamenon since the days of the voyagers.

Recreational Activities
The park offers visitors a wide variety of recreational opportunities. During the spring and summer, camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, nature study and photography are popular activities. Fall colors provide a beautiful picturesque view of the park. In addition, hunters will find ample opportunities to pursue their sport. Winter offers opportunity for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with miles of marked trails. Ice formations along Lake Superior and frozen waterfalls are a photographer’s delight. Moose are occasionally seen wandering through the park, and from time to time, bald eagles are also spotted by visitors. Black bear, coyotes, otter, deer, fox, porcupine, beaver and mink are a few of the other wildlife which can be seen in the park. The abundant bird life includes spruce grouse, sharptail grouse, pileated woodpeckers and a variety of waterfowl and songbirds. One of the few nesting sites in Michigan for the sandhill crane is found in the park.

Camping
Four campgrounds are available in the park; two modern campgrounds at the Lower Falls and a modern and semi-modern campground at the Rivermouth. Each of the modern campgrounds have approximately 90 sites and each site is equipped with electricity, a fire pit and a table. Hot showers and flush toilets are also features of the modern campground. Sanitation stations are available at the Lower Falls and Rivermouth Units. There is no campground located at the Upper Falls. This is the land of Longfellow’s Hiawatha - “by the rushing Tahquamenaw” Hiawatha built his canoe. Long before the white man set eyes on the river, the abundance of fish in its waters and animals along its shores attracted the Ojibwa Indians, who camped, farmed, fished and trapped along its banks. In the late 1800’s came the lumber barons and the river carried their logs by the millions to the mills. Lumberjacks, who harvested the tall timber, were among the first permanent white settlers in the area.
