ANNOUNCING 2018 PERFORMERS

Presenting The Four Freshmen Friday evening for the opening performance in the Theatre

The Four Freshmen

We are proud to announce The Four Freshmen will be opening the weekend Friday evening in the Theatre. Since their inception in 1948, The Four Freshmen have continued to tour worldwide, entertaining audiences year round. In 1948, four young men created a sound that forever changed the way vocal jazz harmony was heard and performed. Known as The Four Freshmen, the group started with two brothers, Don and Ross Barbour, their cousin Bob Flanigan, and friend Hal Kratzsch. Thus, the original Four Freshmen was born and began touring, playing bowling alleys and small clubs across the country. Today the group includes Bob Ferreira, Jonathan Gaines, Tommy Boynton, and Stein Malvey. Bob joined in 1992 and sings the bass vocal part and plays drums. Stein joining the Freshmen in 2013, sings the 2nd part and plays guitar. Jon, joining the Freshmen in 2017 sings the 3rd part and plays trumpet. Tommy, joining the Freshmen in 2015, sings the lead vocals and plays bass. You may recognize one of their biggest hits with Capital Records called “It’s a Blue World.” We look forward to welcoming this jazz quartet to Grand Hotel.

Saturday performances by Cécile McLorin Salvant and Paquito D’Rivera

Cécile McLorin Salvant

We are excited to welcome to Grand Hotel for the first time 2017 GRAMMY® award winner vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. Cécile won this year’s GRAMMY® award for Best Jazz Vocal, after also winning in 2016. She first made waves in the jazz world when, at the urging of her mother, she entered the most prestigious jazz vocal competition in the world. She made it to the finals as their youngest performer and was selected by an illustrious panel of judges – Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Kurt Elling, Patti Austin, and Al Jarreau – as the 2010 Thelonious Monk Competition winner. In 2013, she made her Mack Avenue Records debut with WomanChild, garnering a GRAMMY® Award-nomination, NPR Music’s pick for “Best Jazz Vocal Album of the Year,” and three placements in DownBeat’s critic’s poll as “Jazz Album of the Year,” “Top Female Vocalist,” and “Best Female Jazz Up and Coming Artist of the Year,” among many other accolades. Her 2015 follow up release, For One To Love, won the GRAMMY® Award for “Best Jazz Vocal Album.”

Her music has been featured in multiple Chanel “Chance” campaigns and is included in the soundtrack for HBO’s acclaimed film, Bessie. New York Times Magazine included her recording of “Trolley Song” as one of “25 Songs That Tell Us Where Music Is Going,” The New Yorker profiled her at age 27, Vanity Fair featured her in their “Millennials That Are Shaking Up The Jazz World” piece and Gilles Peterson included her as an “Artist to Watch” in The Atlantic. We are delighted to add Cécile’s artistic voice to the line-up this year.

Saturday evening sit back and relax with, Paquito D’Rivera in the Theatre.

Paquito D’Rivera

Paquito D’Rivera defies categorization. The winner of fourteen GRAMMY® awards, he is celebrated both for his artistry in Latin jazz and his achievements as a classical composer. As an author, instructor, and performer, he is the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award 2005 and the National Medal of the Arts 2005, as well as the Living Jazz Legend Award from the Kennedy Center. These are only a handful of accolades recognizing Mr D’Riveria and his jazz mastery. In 1999, and in celebration of its 500 year history, the Universidad de Alcala de Henares presented Paquito with a special award recognizing his contribution to the arts, his humane qualities, and his defense of rights and liberties of artists around the world. The National Endowment for the Arts website affirms “he has become the consummate multinational ambassador, creating and promoting a cross-culture of music that moves effortlessly among jazz, Latin, and Mozart.” We are honored to welcome Paquito D’Rivera and his five-piece set to the stage on Saturday evening in the Grand Hotel Theatre.

Friday and Saturday evening performances at The Jockey Club with Duffy Jackson

Duffy Jackson

Duff Clark “Duffy” Jackson is a legendary swing jazz drummer. His Dad was Chubby Jackson, renowned upright bass player from Woody Herman’s Orchestra. By the age of ten, Duffy had built up quite a reputation as the “Jazz Wonderkind”, making national television Since his early years Duffy Jackson’s powerful, swinging style has driven such big name bands as Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Lionel Hampton and Illinois Jacquet. He’s also performed with such Jazz legends as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Buddy Rich and Harry “Sweets” Edison to name a few. In addition to his extensive performance and recording experiences, Duffy has been active as an educator, teaching at the University of Miami, Youngstown University, Valdosta State College, and Florida Atlantic University. He has served as guest artist/educator for the Collegiate Band Program at Walt Disney World. He conducts rhythm section and improvisational workshops for elementary, high school and college students and frequently holds Master classes for working drummers as well.

Sunday morning and evening performances by Rachael Davis.

Rachael Davis

Rachael Davis will play the Sunday morning Gospel set on the Front Porch followed by a performance at The Jockey Club that evening.

Multi-instrumentalist Rachael Davis is as renown for her expressive–and explosive–voice as she is for uniting the often desperate worlds of folk, blues, country, and pop. Over a decade career of solo albums and collaborations, the Michigan native has established herself as the best (barely) kept secret in folk music with a poise and confidence on stage–not to mention a song repertoire–that is more associated with veterans with decades of experience. The daughter of professional folk singers, as a child Davis took to harmony, piano, and ukulele early and at 8, joined the family band Lake Effect, performing regularly at folk festivals throughout her home state of Michigan and around the U.S.

Sunday afternoon performance by Branford Marsalis

Branford Marsalis

We are excited to welcome back Branford Marsalis who performed at Grand Hotel in 2013. Branford will take the stage Saturday afternoon in the Grand Hotel Tea Garden. Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason, all whom have performed at Grand Hotel in the past. Branford’s success includes numerous awards, including three Grammys and (together with his father and brothers) and his citation as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. He has continued to expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music, the label he founded in 2002 that has allowed him to produce both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising artists. Classical music inhabits a growing portion of Branford’s musical universe. Branford is frequently heard with leading symphony orchestras including those in Chicago, Detroit, Dusseldorf and North Carolina as well as the New York Philharmonic. He also served as Creative Director for the Cincinnati Symphony’s Ascent series in 2012‐13. Broadway has also welcomed Branford’s contributions, including original music for a revival of August Wilson’s Fences music for The Mountaintop, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett, and served as musical curator for the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun. Branford is sure to provide delightful musical sound Saturday afternoon for your listening pleasure.

All Weekend with Paul Keller

Every evening in the Cupola Bar you can enjoy the bass sounds of Paul Keller. Originally from Grand Rapids, MI, Paul studied classical music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Today Paul is a string bassist from Metro Detroit. He has earned the nickname “The House Bass Player For The State Of Michigan” as each year he logs many miles traveling across the state to perform at various music venues. Mr. Keller is an integral part of Labor Day Jazz Weekend every year and we are excited to welcome him back.
