Eastern U.P. Fall Color Report – October 10, 2024

<>

FROM Pine Stump >> Fall color is finally catching up! This week and weekend would be great for a color tour!!!

<>

FROM McGill’s Nature in Motion >> A few photos of the color around Germfask/Curtis area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan today. Not quite there yet…especially in some of my favorite spots. I would say we are a week or two behind last year. This dry spell is definitely not helping the color. At least the temps are finally starting to feel like Fall…but still no major frost around our area.

FROM Head in the Clouds Photography >> Those colors are really starting to show, I’m guessing a little over a week till peak…

Photos and Updates From 2015

NewberryNewberry Fall Color Report – 10/5 – What a difference a few days (and cool nights) can make! We are seeing a lot more color now, especially where the trees are not as protected as they are in the woods. If you don’t mind driving the “highways” of the area (as opposed to getting deep in the Yooper woods by a gravel road or a two track) you will see some decent color, BUT if you can wait a couple more days it’ll be even better.

I think by this coming weekend, viewing in the area should be pretty good and in SOME places will be close to 60% if not more!! The new “water reflection photo” was taken a couple of days ago. Keep checking back!

<>

NewberryNewberry Fall Color Report – 10/01 – The new photo to go with the report today shows a bit more color than what we’ve been seeing. AND it depends on where you are as to how much color there is. Reports have it that the Toonerville Trolley and Boat Tour are showing about 50% along the river, but you can see from this post that is not the case along side the road.

We took a drive towards Lake Superior and didn’t see hardly any color change going N. out of Eckerman. Then we went on Curly Lewis Hwy which runs e-w and not much there. We cut across on a side road towards Strongs which runs n-s and the photo is pretty representative of what we saw on that 9 mile stretch.

We have had very chilly early a.m. temps and frost which will help the colors start to change more quickly. I think if you try to time it for around October 8 + you should be good.

<>

Fall color report (via Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tours & the Famous Toonerville Trolley). The fall colors are now 50% turned as of today October 1st. Just 2 trips remain on the schedule for the season Saturday October 3rd and Saturday October 10th. The trip on the 3rd is nearly filled so please contact us for reservations SOON if your interested in joining us.

Newberry Fall Color Report – October 5, 2010

Current Fall Color Is PeakFall Color - Newberry, Michigan - October 4, 2010
This glorious maple has lost a lot of leaves in the past couple of days. There is still a lot of good color, but the trees closer to the edge of the woods or out in the open are on the downside of peak and they are loosing their leaves. Better come up now!

(A lot of people aways ask, what determines when color changes. The early fall weather conditions are one of the factors. We need sunny days and cool nights for brilliant colors. And of course, when we start having less daylight hours, that promotes the changes too. With shorter daylight hours, the trees will be producing less chlorophyll.)

The following are some suggested rides through our neck of the woods…take a trip up to Crisp Point Lighthouse. You can get there via CR500 to CR412. Just follow the signs. You’ll drive through all types of trees; hardwoods and pines. Some guests have sighted bears and one even reported seeing a moose on their trip to Crisp Point. Get yourself a Luce Co. map and be adventuresome…take some of those other County Roads or two tracks (providing you aren’t driving your RV or your Beemer!)

It is always an excellent trip from Newberry to Whitefish Point via M-123. Make sure you include a stop at the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls. Colors along this stretch of highway can be pretty impressive. (And CR 500 to get to Crisp Point is off from M-123). About 10 miles N. of Newberry on M-123 is a dirt road called Skyline Dr. A very pretty stretch of road in the fall. It’s one of those roads that you turn around eventually and head back out the way you came.

CR 402 (aka Folley Hill Rd) is another road you’d enjoy. It offers some very scenic vistas at the top of the hills on this road. This road is just south of the State Police Post about 2 miles. It is off from M-123.

As I have said in other years, get a Luce Co. map and take some of the side roads. You could be surprised at what you see! Another suggestion is to call the Luce Co. airport at 906-293-2926 and book a flight over the Tahquamenon Falls and Crisp Point. You really haven’t experienced the blues of Lake Superior and the wonderful colors of autumn in our area until you’ve flown over Crisp Point!

Newberry – Eastern U.P. – September 24, 2010

I was finally able to get a new photo for you, in between the rain and sprinkles!

We’re seeing more and more color changes every couple of days. The cherry trees have lost a lot of their leaves, but the other trees are still holding on to their leaves and slowly putting on a colorful display.
It is getting close to time for you to bag your bags and charge up the batteries for your camera and come on up! I don’t think you’d be disappointed if you came up the very beginning of next week! The extended weather report is looking good for next week!

Newberry – September 12, 2010
A little bit of fall color and a rainbow… Fall colors are just starting. There are splotches of yellow and orange on some of the maples, a few blushes of pinks and reds mixed in but nothing to get excited about yet. (Courtesy of Northcountry Campground & Cabins – www.michiweb.com/northcountry )

Newberry Area Fall Color Photos 10/3/2008

.

October 3, 2008 — The leaves are turning very quickly now and the wind is taking a lot of leaves off the poplars, birch and cherry trees. It is supposed to be nicer next week and a bit warmer. The Weather Wizards are predicting we could get down into the low 30’s to upper 20’s tonight. M-117 which runs from U.S. 2 to M-28 is just beautiful! Even in the rain! The colors from M-28 to the Junction of M-123 (just south of Newberry) will captivate your eyes as well! SO PACK YOUR BAGS! NOW IS THE TIME!!! — Cathy Clementz – Northcountry Cabins & Campground

September 24, 2008 — It is cloudy today but the dismal tint of the western sky only enhances the color of the trees. I would say that our immediate area is at about 35-40% with fall foliage. If you came up now, you would see some beautiful trees but if you can wait about 5-7 days, you will enjoy your trip more. — Cathy Clementz – Northcountry Cabins & Campground

Tahquamenon Falls – Eastern U.P.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park encompasses close to 40,000 acres stretching over 13 miles. Most of this is undeveloped woodland without roads, buildings or power lines. The centerpiece of the park, and the very reason for its existence, is the Tahquamenon River, with its waterfalls.

The Upper Falls
One of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. It has a drop of nearly 50 feet and is more than 200 feet across. A maximum flow of more than 50,000 gallons of water per second has been recorded cascading over these falls.

The Lower Falls
Four miles downstream is the Lower Falls, a series of five smaller falls cascading around an island. Although not as dramatic as the Upper Falls, they are equally magnificent. The falls can be viewed from the river bank or from the island, which can be reached by rowboat rented from a park concession. The island walk affords a view of the falls in the south channel.

The Tahquamenon River
Rising from springs north of McMillan and drains the watershed of an area of more than 790 square miles. From its source, it meanders 94 miles before emptying into Whitefish Bay. The amber color of the water is not rust nor is it muddiness; it is caused by tannin leached from the Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock in the swamps drained by the river. The extremely soft water churned by the action of the falls causes the large amounts of foam, which has been the trademark of the Tahquamenon since the days of the voyagers.

Recreational Activities
The park offers visitors a wide variety of recreational opportunities. During the spring and summer, camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, nature study and photography are popular activities. Fall colors provide a beautiful picturesque view of the park. In addition, hunters will find ample opportunities to pursue their sport. Winter offers opportunity for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing with miles of marked trails. Ice formations along Lake Superior and frozen waterfalls are a photographer’s delight. Moose are occasionally seen wandering through the park, and from time to time, bald eagles are also spotted by visitors. Black bear, coyotes, otter, deer, fox, porcupine, beaver and mink are a few of the other wildlife which can be seen in the park. The abundant bird life includes spruce grouse, sharptail grouse, pileated woodpeckers and a variety of waterfowl and songbirds. One of the few nesting sites in Michigan for the sandhill crane is found in the park.

Camping
Four campgrounds are available in the park; two modern campgrounds at the Lower Falls and a modern and semi-modern campground at the Rivermouth. Each of the modern campgrounds have approximately 90 sites and each site is equipped with electricity, a fire pit and a table. Hot showers and flush toilets are also features of the modern campground. Sanitation stations are available at the Lower Falls and Rivermouth Units. There is no campground located at the Upper Falls. This is the land of Longfellow’s Hiawatha – “by the rushing Tahquamenaw” Hiawatha built his canoe. Long before the white man set eyes on the river, the abundance of fish in its waters and animals along its shores attracted the Ojibwa Indians, who camped, farmed, fished and trapped along its banks. In the late 1800’s came the lumber barons and the river carried their logs by the millions to the mills. Lumberjacks, who harvested the tall timber, were among the first permanent white settlers in the area.
