Fall Color Update – September 12, 2014

We are just a couple of weeks away from the early part of the color season in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Michigan. Traditionally, early season color starts taking hold in the interior regions of the Western U.P. during the last week of September with some significant peak color in the region by the first of October. The color changes will follow in the regions near Lake Superior about 5 to 7 days after the interior. For great views of the fall color near Ironwood, we highly recommend a trip to the top of the ski jump at Copper Peak. The chair lifts at the Porcupine Mountains Ski Area will also be operating this fall to get visitor some great views of the fall colors against the back drop of Lake Superior.

Upper Peninsula – It’s never too early to start planning your fall color tour in the Upper Peninsula. The leaves start changing colors in September and you will find some areas in peak colors during the last week of September.

Northern Lower Michigan – The color in Northern Lower Michigan is generally about a week – and in some areas two weeks – behind the color in the Upper Peninsula. Look for some areas in peak color around October 10th with the overall peak color season lasting into the latter half of October.

Color season tours and Harvest season events and Halloween activities will be happening throughout Northern Lower Michigan. You can visit the Haunted Forest at Crystal Mountain or experience the Zipline of Terror at Boyne Mountain. Check out the events page for some of the best of the late season fall events.
