A full palette of colors are cascading throughout Michigan this fall, and it’s the perfect time to experience Mother Nature in her most beautiful state.
Michigan’s annual fall color show is on the move. All of Marquette County is bursting with peak color! Hike or bike along the acclaimed Noquemanon Trail Network in North or South Marquette to take in the fall splendor before warming up at one Marquette County’s seven (and counting!) craft breweries.
In the Eastern Upper Peninsula, most trees are in full color range reporting 75-100 percent change. Deep reds and bright yellows prevail with minimal green foliage remaining. Chippewa County’s fall foliage is nearing its glory with 51–75% peak conditions. Now is the perfect time to experience the area’s amazing fall show. Mackinac Island—bordering lakes Huron and Superior—is still running behind other UP communities. Peak color is expected to reach the island in one to two weeks.
NORTHWEST LOWER PENINSULA
In and around the Charlevoix area, visitors will find great color driving along C-48 from Boyne Falls to Atwood through the small towns along the way. Another great route is from Boyne Falls along M-75 to Boyne City. Reds and oranges are particularly bold and leaf retention is reported to be very good. Peak color is one or two weeks.
The colors throughout the Grand Traverse Bay region are becoming more pronounced near the shoreline, creating a beautiful contrast of reds and golds against the blue bay. Grab a hot coffee downtown and enjoy the festive storefronts, then walk down to Clinch Park and enjoy leaf peeping among the area’s stunning fall foliage. For those visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, be sure to swing into Gallagher’s Farm Market on M-72 for a pumpkin donut and cider. Peak color is expected in one or two weeks.
Manistee County is seeing purples, reds and golds around the Manistee National Forest. Wellston area color is starting to peak as well. Inland color is turning quicker than coastal color. Peak conditions for this area as well as the Petoskey area are one or two weeks away.
NORTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA
The Grayling area is mostly past peak. However, there are still pockets of predominately yellows and oranges and a mix of reds remaining. If you happen to be in Crawford County this weekend, heading southeast is your best bet to experience area color. Hartwick Pines State Park is also a great destination for a crisp fall afternoon with the family.
WEST CENTRAL LOWER PENINSULA
The trees in the greater Holland area are just beginning to turn. Mount Pleasant, White Lake, Hart, the area around the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and the Holland area are all reporting to be about one week away from peak viewing color. With its state parks, trails and nature preserves, the area is the ideal destination for a family RV color excursion.
EAST CENTRAL LOWER PENINSULA
Throughout Alcona County, the maples are red and orange, mingled with some combinations of chartreuse, yellow and tangerine. The forests and hills near Hubbard Lake lead to miles of jewel-colored woodlands and great views of the lake. The area has passed peak, but nature enthusiasts can still enjoy a leisurely drive down the back roads, biking or hiking through Hartwick Pines State Park, or taking in the riverside colors while canoeing down the AuSable and Manistee rivers.
Seemingly overnight, the yellows and reds of fall have arrived in Frankenmuth. With the recent burst of cooler air comes the changing of the trees. The splendor of fall color along the Lake Huron shoreline will captivate outdoor enthusiasts and paddle sports fans. Other highlights include state parks, farm markets and antique shops. Peak color is nearly here—just one to two weeks away!
SOUTHWEST LOWER PENINSULA South Haven and other Southwest Michigan communities are starting to display stunning reds, oranges and yellows. Area color tours include cider mills, u-pick farms, roadside markets, wineries and quiet hiking trails. Peak conditions are expected in one to two weeks.
SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA Ann Arbor colors are filling in and leaves are beginning to fall. Try to spot a golden yellow maple tree among the brilliant shades overtaking the area. After a day of fall color excursions, head to Ypsilanti for an evening of illuminated excitement at a Highland Cemetery Lantern Tour.
For a dose of Michigan history with your fall color tour, follow old Indian trails and territorial roads – discover an early tavern, a battlefield, the hometown of an infamous general, and even a winery or two. The colors along the mostly two-lane highway route are usually best from mid-to-late October
Livingston, Wayne, Macomb and Washtenaw counties are still one to two weeks away from peak, reporting 25-50 percent color change currently.

The Leelanau Harvest Tour is a great biking adventure for both families and single riders as the fall colors begin to show and temperatures begin to cool. Leaving from the Suttons Bay High School, routes of approximately 20, 40, 65, and 100 miles wind throughout beautiful Leelanau County on excellent paved roads passing by farms, orchards, vineyards, dunes, and through quaint villages. So come, ride, relax, and enjoy all that this beautiful peninsula has to offer.
Four Beautiful Routes
After nine miles on the Leelanau Trail, the 20 mile route follows the east side of South Lake Leelanau then returns to the Trail to finish in Suttons Bay. Being mostly flat this is an ideal route for younger riders.
The 40 mile route begins the same as the short route then continues north along the east side of both North and South Lake Leelanau and passes though the village of Lake Leelanau before returning to Suttons Bay via the Leelanau Trail from Dumas Rd.
After leaving the Leelanau Trail 10.5 miles south of Suttons Bay, the 65 mile route heads west through Maple City, north around Little Traverse Lake, through Lake Leelanau, up the east side of North Lake Leelanau and then over Herman Hill to the finish.
The 100 mile route extends the 65 mile route north to the Grand Traverse Lighthouse at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula and the village of Northport with more hills and scenic views.

We are SAVING ACME FALL FESTIVAL! Last week the Acme Business Association unanimously voted to separate Acme Fall Festival from the ABA. This will allow the AFF to become a nonprofit organization. We have filed the paperwork and look forward to getting this approved very soon.
In the meantime, the volunteer organizers have been meeting and planning for next years’ festival, September 26, 2020. Many of you have asked what you can do to help save the festival. The answer is volunteer and sponsor the festival. Our website will be live once our nonprofit status is approved and able to accept donations. Starting January we will be meeting the second Thursday of each month at 5:30, at East Bay Pizza at Woodland Creek. If you are willing to help organize the festival, please feel free to comment on this post.
This year’s Acme Fall Festival has been canceled for the first time in nine years. What started as a small community festival in Acme has quickly grown into a fall tradition in the community. The festival director stepped down from her role and now organizers are taking this time to regroup and...
WE ARE SAVING ACME FALL FESTIVAL!!! WE WILL BE BACK FALL 2020!!!
I'm very excited to say Acme Fall Festival will be back September 26, 2020.
Hi, my name is Lesley Werth Endres. I will be joining the other hardworking committee members, as the Festival Director.
We were all devastated when the announcement was made that the Festival was not happening this year. It is a huge undertaking all accomplished by dedicated volunteers and our very supportive Sponsors. Kara Peck, who has done an amazing job as the Director for the last 9 years, needed to focus more on her VERY active family. Thankfully she will continue to volunteer for AFF in other areas. In addition, to guiding me through this next transition year.
I have spent many years volunteering for AFF and I'm very excited to be part of its future. It is truly a beloved community event and we are going to take this next year to regroup so we can all enjoy our Festival for years to come!!!
This next year we will keep you posted and don't forget to "SAVE THE DATE" - September 26, 2020 and the last Saturday in September thereafter. #saveacmefallfestival ... See MoreSee Less
