Saturday and Sunday mornings you will have the unique opportunity to interact with the artists during Q&A sessions hosted by Paul Anthony. All weekend long you will be able to sit back and relax with late-night performances at the Cupola Bar and The Jockey Club at the Grand Stand by Paul Keller. Escape to America’s Summer Place for Labor Day Weekend and immerse yourself in the melody of beautiful jazz music played by some of the country’s top performers.

Announcing the full lineup for Labor Day Jazz Weekend!

Presenting Regina Carter Friday evening for the opening performance in the Theatre

Regina Carter

We are proud to announce Grammy nominated artist Regina Carter will be opening the weekend Friday evening in the Theatre. A recipient of the MacArthur “genius” award and a Doris Duke Artist Award, Regina has been widely hailed for her mastery of her instrument and her drive to expand its possibilities. She enjoys performing many styles of music—jazz, R&B, Latin, classical, blues, country, pop and African. In each she explores the power of music through the voice of the violin which she began studying at the age of four. Born in Detroit, she first gained attention with Straight Ahead, an all-female jazz quintet that performed at the Labor Day Jazz Weekend in 2001, and recently celebrated its 25-year reunion at the Detroit Jazz Festival. She also recorded and toured for six years with The String Trio of New York. Most recently, the acclaimed violinist was selected as the 2017 Showcase Artist for the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival and in 2018 was appointed as the Director of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s All-Female Jazz Residency, a unique summer immersion program for aspiring women jazz professionals. Her most recent release, Ella: Accentuate the Positive (2017), celebrates the music and spirit of her inspiration: musical legend, Ella Fitzgerald.

Saturday performances by Steve March-Tormé, and John Pizzarelli, Jr. and Catherine Russell

Steve March-Tormé

Saturday afternoon Steve March-Tormé will perform in the Tea Garden. Steve March-Tormé was born in New York City to the multi-talented Mel Tormé and Candy Tockstein, a model/actress. He is touring this year to support his project to honor the 20-year anniversary of his Dad’s passing with “Tormé sings Tormé.” A natural interest exists in hearing Steve sing the songs his dad was known for and Steve is proud to have the opportunity to pay tribute to his father.

In the late 1970s, Steve recorded his first LP, Lucky, for United Artists Records. Upon returning to California, he produced and sang on Liza Minnelli’s Columbia Records release Tropical Nights, which became a favorite of the New York dance clubs. He spent three years as the featured vocalist on ABC-TV’s $100,000 Name That Tune and also hosted two Los Angeles-based television shows, Video 22 (a precursor to MTV) and Box Office America. Steve’s latest CD, “inside/out,” is a set of 12 brand new, original tunes written entirely by Steve and is the first CD he’s recorded on which he not only sings but plays keyboards and guitar. In addition to his performing and recording career, Steve also hosts his own radio shows in Green Bay, Wisconsin and Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Later Saturday evening John Pizzarelli, Jr., a favorite of Grand Hotel guests, will perform with Grammy Award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell. Most recently John performed at the Grand in 2017 and 2014 during the hotel’s Labor Day Jazz Weekends. Previous to that, he played a special set during the hotel’s 125thAnniversary Celebration in 2012. Together John and Catherine will perform a stunning tribute to Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra.

World-renowned guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli, hailed by The Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz,” has established himself as one of the prime interpreters of the American standards and beyond. Acclaimed vocalist Catherine Russell was born into jazz, as the daughter of Luis Russell, long-time musical director to Louis Armstrong, and pioneering jazz guitarist and vocalist Carline Ray. She has toured the world and has many decorated albums to her credit. The two join forces for their first collaboration, featuring soulful interpretations of chart-topping classics like “All of Me,” “God Bless the Child,” “Witchcraft” and “One More for My Baby.” Instead of stepping back in time to reenact the work of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra, Russell and Pizzarelli pull the music gracefully into the present, performing in a program that is part tribute and part personal introduction to the people who made this music famous.

Friday and Saturday evening performances at The Jockey Club with John Boutte

John Boutte

We are glad to welcome back John Boutte, who has played during past Labor Day Jazz Weekends at The Jockey Club and was also an Artist in Residence at Grand Hotel. Along with his other performances, John will also be a guest for a couple of songs Sunday afternoon with ¡Cubanismo!

After high school, John studied at Xavier University, a black Catholic institution known in New Orleans. After graduating John was commissioned as officer in the U.S. Army and provided with the opportunity to direct and sing in the Army gospel choirs in Virginia, Texas and, eventually, Korea. It was in Korea, ironically, when singing gospel and deep, deep blues after-hours in restaurants that he began to know himself as an American, an artist and a person. Not long after his return to the States, John was invited to tour almost the entirety of Europe with his sister Lillian, which gave John a chance to meditate on the very idea of a life led as a jazz singer. Back home to New Orleans, John began to open shows for the likes of Mel Tormé, Lou Rawls, Rosemary Clooney and, most recently, Herbie Hancock. John’s recordings include “Through the Eyes of a Child,” “Scotch and Soda,” and the remarkable “Jambalaya,” recorded for Bose. Another CD entitled Gospel United, a concert recording arranged in Denmark, contains his remarkable solo arrangement of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” which has achieved Gold Record status in several European markets.

Jesús Alemañy

Sunday afternoon Tea Garden performance by ¡Cubanismo!
¡Cubanismo!
brings the fire of the Havana dance floor, full of swaggering horn charts, brilliant harmonies and wild Cuban polyrhythms. From the irresistible traditional to the super exciting modern, their infectious music is the very heartbeat of Cuba itself, including iconic Cuban rhythms that keep the world dancing to this day, such as Mambo, Salsa, Chachachá, Danzon, Desacarga, Bolero, Rumba, Son and Latin Jazz.

Led by Jesús Alemañy – a trumpeter for the legendary Son group Sierra Maestra from the age of fifteen – the group began as a recording project. The subsequent eponymous album became one of the Latin crossover albums of the ‘90s, and made the Top Ten Lists of Billboard, Latin Beat and Afropop Worldwide.

¡Cubanismo! has recorded seven albums and has been touring more that 50 countries worldwide, performing in the biggest jazz festivals, theaters, and art centers. In 2008 their release “Greetings from Havana” (Aim Records) was Grammy nominated “Best Tropical Latin Album”. This year, reassembled as a new band, and to celebrate their 20th anniversary of touring, ¡Cubanismo! is touring the world again, performing concerts in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Europe, Canada and USA.

All Weekend with Paul Keller in the Cupola Bar and The Jockey Club

Enjoy the sounds of Paul Keller in the Cupola Bar Friday and Saturday evening, and then new this year, at The Jockey Club on Sunday. Originally from Grand Rapids, MI and now residing in metro Detroit, Paul studied classical music at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has earned the nickname “The House Bass Player for the State of Michigan,” as each year he logs many miles traveling across the state to perform at various music venues. Mr. Keller is an integral part of Labor Day Jazz Weekend every year and we are excited to welcome him back.

You are encouraged to make your reservation early so you don’t miss out on what is promised to be an enjoyable weekend.

THE 62nd ANNUAL MACKINAC BRIDGE WALK – September 2, 2019

The Mackinac Bridge Authority, the St. Ignace Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Mackinaw Area Chamber of Commerce would like to make your Bridge Walk as pleasant as possible and offer the following information:

As it was for the 2018 Annual Bridge Walk, the Mackinac Bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019 to accommodate the 2019 Annual Bridge Walk.

No bus transportation across the bridge will be available this year. Walkers who decide to walk across the entire bridge will need to arrange their own transportation back to the end of the bridge where they started – after the bridge reopens to public traffic at noon.

There is limited parking space available west of the Mackinac Bridge Authority plaza area. Parking and shuttle service is being provided by the St. Ignace Chamber of Commerce and St. Ignace Visitor’s Bureau and is available at Little Bear East Arena.

There is no fee or registration required to participate in the walk.

The walk begins at 7 a.m. You may start walking any time after the governor’s party starts the walk at approximately 7 a.m. No one will be permitted to start after 11:30 a.m., so make sure you arrive early.

This year, the walk begins in St. Ignace at the north end of the Mackinac Bridge in the Upper Peninsula, and in Mackinaw City at the south end of the bridge in the Lower Peninsula. To participate in the walk you may:

  • Walk from either end of the bridge, then turn around at the midpoint and return to the community where you started the walk. Beginning at 10 a.m., the turnaround point will be moved towards the ends of the bridge, but you may start walking up until 11:30 a.m.
  • Walk from either end of the bridge, and continue across to the other side. This option is most like previous bridge walks. However, since bus transportation across the bridge will not be available, walkers who choose this option will need to arrange for their own transportation back across after the bridge reopens at noon. Walkers who do not reach the midpoint of the bridge before 10 a.m. will be turned back.
  • Walk from either end of the bridge, continuing across to the other side, then walking back to the end of the bridge you started from. This options will mean a 10-mile round trip for participants. If walkers in this option do not reach the midpoint of the bridge on their return trip by 10 a.m. will be turned back.

Walkers will use the left-hand outside paved lane as they walk onto the bridge, regardless of which end of the bridge they start from. Walkers who turn back at the midpoint will turn right, then return using the opposite side outside paved lane. Walkers who choose to cross the entire bridge will stay in the left-hand outside paved lane all the way across.

The Michigan State Police and other official personnel will be available in the event of an emergency. Please note, there are no restrooms on the bridge and the average length of time to walk the bridge is about two hours. Portable toilets will be located in St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.

Baby strollers and wheelchairs are allowed on the bridge during the walk. Prohibited items include signs, banners, umbrellas, bicycles, roller skates, skateboards, wagons and similar types of devices. With the sole exception of working service dogs, no animals are allowed. Walkers must stay away from bridge railings. The inside lanes in each direction will remain open for emergency vehicles. Except for pre-qualified, registered participants in the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Run, no running or racing is permitted on the bridge. Playing tag on the bridge is not permitted and no smoking on the bridge, please. For information on the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness Run, please go to www.michiganfitness.org or contact the Governor’s Council at 517-347-7891.

You will receive a numbered bridge walk certificate at the completion of your walk. Certificates will be distributed at both ends of the bridge.

Individuals under the age of 18 should have the permission of a parent or guardian to participate in the walk. Any two or more people walking together should make plans for a meeting place in the event that they become separated during the walk.

Disclaimer of liability: Before beginning the walk, all participants should carefully determine that they are physically fit and medically able to participate in the annual walk since the physical strain of the walk could lead to serious health problems. Participants should also understand that walking involves risks of injury from falls due to the surface condition of the bridge, contact with other participants, and the effects of weather including high heat and/or humidity. THE STATE OF MICHIGAN, MACKINAC BRIDGE AUTHORITY, ST. IGNACE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, MACKINAW AREA CHAMBER OR COMMERCE, AND ALL THEIR RESPECTIVE EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS ASSUME NO OBLIGATIONS WITH REGARD TO SUCH RISKS AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY ARISING FROM ANY WALKER’S PARTICIPATION IN THE ANNUAL WALK.

As in the past, persons who need reasonable accommodations due to disability may contact the Mackinac Bridge Authority by Aug. 30, 2019 at 906-643-7600. TTY users may call the Michigan Relay Center at 800-649-3777.
