Grand Hotel’s Labor Day Jazz Weekend – September 3 – 6, 2021

Grand Hotel's Labor Day Jazz Weekend

Escape to America’s Summer Place for Labor Day Weekend and immerse yourself in the melody of beautiful jazz music, played by some of the country’s top performers.

The package includes receptions, a cookout luncheon in the Tea Garden Saturday and Sunday afternoons, breakfast and dinner daily, and all entertainment — plus a Sunday morning gospel performance on the Front Porch. Interact with the artists during Q&A sessions hosted by Paul Anthony on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Then sit back and relax with late-night performances at the Cupola Bar and The Jockey Club at the Grand Stand all weekend long.

Make your reservation early, so you don’t miss out on what is promised to be a memorable weekend!

Performer Announcements

We are excited to welcome Diane Schuur, The Yellowjackets, Anat Cohen, The Hot Sardines, Dave Bennett, and Paul Keller as this year’s Labor Day Jazz Weekend Performers.

Diane Schuur

Long regarded as one of Contemporary Jazz’s leading vocalists, Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Schuur was blind from birth; but she was gifted with perfect pitch and three-and-a-half-octave vocal range. She initially taught herself piano by ear and later received formal piano training at The Washington State School for the Blind, which she attended until she was 11 years of age. Schuur’s latest recording Running On Faith was co-produced by Schuur and Grammy winning saxophonist Ernie Watts. On this very personal musical statement, released by Jazzheads Music Group (JH1243), the vocalist creates new versions of songs for which she has a deep-rooted affection. Performing on piano throughout, Schuur arranges music by some of her favorite performers and songwriters; from Miles Davis to Carole King to Paul Simon. Grand Hotel is excited to welcome Ms. Schuur back to the festival.

The Yellowjackets

Throughout their storied 43-year history, the Yellowjackets have recorded 25 albums, received 17 Grammy® nominations – won 2 – performed countless sold-out tours, and enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success. The Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitarist Robben Ford. They recorded their first album together in 1980. Shortly after that recording, however, Ford decided to part ways and go in a different musical direction. As a result, the modern day Yellowjackets were formed — a trio with Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip and Ricky Lawson. Since then, and with the addition of Bob Mintzer, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one of jazz’s most influential and loved groups. The most recent addition to the band adds Australian bass player Dane Alderson in to the mix. With his exceptional rhythmic sensibility and natural disposition toward groove, Dane brings a new energy to the band and adds a youthful approach to the music.

Anat Cohen

Ever charismatic, prolific and inspired, Grammy-nominated clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen has won hearts and minds the world over with her expressive virtuosity and delightful stage presence. Anat has been declared Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007 and has also been named the top clarinetist in both the readers and critics polls in DownBeat for multiple years running. That’s not to mention years of being named Rising Star in the soprano and tenor saxophone categories in DownBeat, as well as Jazz Artist of the Year. As The Chicago Tribune has said, “The lyric beauty of her tone, easy fluidity of her technique and extroverted manner of her delivery make this music accessible to all.” The New York Times writes, “Ms. Cohen on the clarinet was a revelation. Using the clarinet’s upper register, she could evoke infectious joy. In the lower register, her playing could conjure a deep, soulful melancholy.”

The Hot Sardines

“These are times that need live music. And I don’t know of anything that brings people together like the joy of hearing traditional jazz live,” says Elizabeth Bougerol, co-leader of The Hot Sardines, with pianist and bandleader, Evan Palazzo. These mischief-makers of hot jazz have been described as “potent and assured” (The New York Times) and “simply phenomenal” (The Times, London), with more than a year on the Billboard Jazz chart and 20+ million streams on Spotify (over 90 countries). “Everything in our DNA is about connecting with the audience. That’s where we feel most at home,” says Elizabeth, of playing live with the eight-piece band (including one wildly percussive tap dancer). The Sardines have gone from speakeasies and underground parties in Brooklyn, to festival crowds of 25,000 and a TV debut on Later… with Jools Holland. “That’s where jazz lives,” adds Evan. “In the playing, in sharing that experience, in coming together to create a moment that won’t happen again.”

Dave Bennett

Dave Bennett is a clarinet virtuoso who also plays electric guitar, piano, drums, and vocalizes. He’s been a favorite of Grand Hotel guests, playing the annual festival a number of times. Dave has been a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall with The New York Pops, and has played with numerous orchestras including Detroit, Nashville, Toronto, San Antonio, and Vancouver. Dozens of performing arts centers across the US have has success with Dave’s presentations. He’s been featured on NPR Radio’s “Jazz at Riverwalk”, and made his European debut at Switzerland’s Bern Jazz Festival in a combo alongside the late Jazz legend Bucky Pizzarelli.

Paul Keller

Paul Keller is a string bassist who has earned the nickname of “The House Bass Player For The State Of Michigan”. Paul leads the 15 piece Paul Keller Orchestra along with the three horn piece sextet, the Paul Keller Ensemble. Paul has also performed on over 60 CD’s for many musical artists and was honored as the Jazz Musician of the the Year in 2001 by the West Michigan Jazz Society. Paul was also awarded as the 2002 Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalist by the Detroit Music Society.
